Most of our hearing depends on the desire to hear. Sometimes we hear the sounds of our ears and sometimes we stop our ears and filter our ears. The correction this month is to re-implant hearing and open ears wide so that we will hear not only what we want to hear, but mainly what we do not always want to hear, such as criticism, rebuke and morality.
Hearing is a connecting thread designed to connect people, it is connected to the counting of intelligence, and this is one of the three Sefirot called head (Mochin). In these spheres there are no limits, limits, and limits. This is the most harmonious place in which a whole unity is revealed, where all the contradictions are reconciled and the boundaries become blurred.
Most of our hearing depends on the desire to hear. Sometimes we hear the sounds of our ears and sometimes we stop our ears and filter our ears. The correction this month is to re-establish hearing and open ears wide so that we will hear not only what we want to hear, but what we do not always want to hear, such as criticism, reproach and morality.
In a beautiful talmudic legend, the Sages tell us about the days of the wandering of the Israelites in the wilderness: it was the month of Av, the spies sent by Moshe to tour the land where their mission was and to bring the slander of the land to the conclusion that it was “the land of the inhabitants of its inhabitants.” The spies, whose wandering lives in the open and free wilderness were heartwarming and body broken from persecution, enslavement and bitter labors, felt too helpless and too small to conquer and settle the land. They tried to communicate to the listeners. So that the smallness of self-worth tried to influence the collective and penetrate deeply into the consciousness.
The story goes on to say that anyone who was touched by the words of the spies and the sense of impotence and helplessness overcame the inner heroism and the uprightness of the punishment. Why? For those who are afraid of being diverted from the sacred goal of entering the Promised Land – a small thinker who feels weak and such a person really can not. And so it is told in the legend that anyone who identified with the words of the spies died in the desert. This happened every year, until, in the fortieth year, in the middle of the month of Av, “all the dead,” all the generation of the forefathers, slaves who grew up in Egypt and everyone who felt small and helpless, passed away.
Years passed and the wheel of life gave rise to a new, young and energetic generation born under freedom under the desert sun. And only then, on Tu B’Av that year, as it is stated in the Book of Judges, on the day when the moon is full, a new period in the life of the people of Israel began: “He made the ninth sign of hearing and tied it with a crown and attached them to each other, .
According to the Book of Creation, the month of Av is connected to the sense of hearing and the kidneys in the human body. The disadvantage of the month of Av began with hearing – in listening to the words of the spies who said, “And there
The intelligence information aroused the fear that broke the spirit and the national morale in its inability to fulfill the task. The vision of the promised land turned out to be impossible, and that lofty visionary goal was pushed aside and failed to harness everyone to the task.
The organ identified with the month of Av is a kidney – and just as it filters the blood and excretes metabolic waste, the spiritual role of this month is to filter the consciousness out of negative particles of consciousness, such as low self-worth, weakness and head bending that lead to sadness, despair and old age. There is no connection to the biological age, but rather to the emotional spending that has ceased to bear the weight of the burden, regardless of the age or the worn souls, internal aging invites a consciousness of inferior self-worth – “and we will be like grasshoppers.” They felt like grasshoppers and before them the luck of the month, which is the lion, the king of the animals, a leader and a symbol of kingship.
One of the dangers lurking for the king is his lack of listening to his subjects, and therefore a proper kingdom is measured by its ability to hear the people’s words also, if they do not listen to their ears. This month warns not to fall into a situation of “I am talking and you listen” and teaches that hearing should be used as a tool for understanding others and expressing the voices of the other side, which often disappear in the mixture of talk, noise and roaring outside and at home.
This is how the ritual returns every year. As part of preparations for the new year in Tishrei, the month of Av comes at the height of the summer – Horev, the month of destruction. To destroy is not to destroy the good but to remove all that hinders growth and renewal and to destroy everything that gives us a sense of low self-worth and incompetence. How do you know what to destroy? It is not complicated, let’s start with a voice within me that “hears the advice of the spies” – all those who do not see the horizon spread and hope for a better future
